Relationship of Estradiol and Progesterone with Partnership and Parity Among Bangladeshi and British Women of European Origin.Gillian R. Bentley, Alejandra Núñez-de la Mora, Michele C. Freed, Khurshida Begum, Shanthi Muttukrishna, Taniya Sharmeen, Lorna Murphy, Robert T. Chatterton, Osul Chowdhury, Richard Gunu & Lynnette Leidy Sievert - 2023 - Human Nature 34 (1):1-24.
Recent studies in social endocrinology have explored the effects of social relationships on female reproductive steroid hormones—estradiol and progesterone—investigating whether they are suppressed in partnered and parous women. Results have been mixed for these hormones although evidence is more consistent that partnered women and women with young children have lower levels of testosterone. These studies were sequential to earlier research on men, based on Wingfield’s Challenge Hypothesis, which showed that men in committed relationships, or with young children, have lower levels (...)

Dim and dimmer: an exploration of the production and diffusion of scientific knowledge in Australia between the 1770s and the 2010s.Lynnette Hicks - 2016 - Dissertation, Macquarie University
Despite growing public concerns around socio-scientific problems and the significance of these problems to everyday life, there is a dearth of sociological literature addressing the production and diffusion of the natural sciences in Australia. In particular, critical analyses of scientific knowledge production and diffusion relative to the actions of the state, the market and civil society are largely absent. This thesis sets out to mitigate this situation by contributing a critical historiography of scientific knowledge production and diffusion as it relates (...)

Perceptions of dishonesty among two-year college students: Academic versus business situations. [REVIEW]M. Lynnette Smyth & James R. Davis - 2004 - Journal of Business Ethics 51 (1):63-73.
This study statistically analyzes two-year college students' attitudes toward cheating via a survey containing academic and business situations that the students evaluated on a seven point scale from unethical to ethical. When both the general questions concerning attitudes about cheating and the opinions on the ethical statements are considered, the business students were generally more unethical in their behavior and attitudes than non-business majors. These results indicate a need for more ethical exposure in business courses to help students distinguish ethical (...)

    Another look at Wittgenstein on color exclusion.Don Sievert - 1989 - Synthese 78 (3):291-318.
In 1929, Wittgenstein reconsidered the vexing color-Incompatibility problem: explaining how and why more than one color cannot be at a single time and place. He continued discussing the problem in 1930 and later. He offered solutions in the "tractatus", In 1929 and in 1930. Are the solutions the same? clearly not, Because the 1929 solution differs from his earlier one. However, I argue that the 1930 solution is substantially identical with that of 1929 and that the 1929-30 solution is continuous (...)

    Descartes's self-doubt.Donald Sievert - 1975 - Philosophical Review 84 (1):51-69.
I contend that in the "meditations" descartes expresses both certainty and doubt that he exists. He is certain that he exists when he views himself in terms of occurrent acts of thinking; his certainty stems from his "observing" such acts. When he views himself in terms of an "unobservable" thinking substance, The belief that acts are in a thinking substance is central. Thinking substances can be known to exist only by demonstrating that this belief is true, And the demonstration can (...)

Descartes' Criteria of Truth: Conception and Perception.Donald Sievert - 1979 - Modern Schoolman 56 (2):151-160.
My aim is to call attention to two features of Descartes' presentation of his so-called criterion of truth in the third meditation. First, there is an explicit shift between "clear and distinct "perception"" and "clear and distinct "conception"." Second, in the two paragraphs which follow the presentation of the criterion, Descartes proceeds to highlight a correlative distinction. Roughly speaking, the distinction is between perceiving something and having "persuasive" conceptions of something. This distinction not only corresponds to the shift between "perceive" (...)

    Descartes on theological knowledge.Donald Sievert - 1982 - Philosophy and Phenomenological Research 43 (2):201-219.
Arnauld charged descartes with circularity in his theological proof. I argue that descartes's system is circular. Then I discuss how descartes responds to this problem. He develops distinctions which only seem to allay the circularity charge. Ironically, It is descartes himself, By means of his insistence on the idea-Thing distinction and attendant doubts, And his insistence on 'doubting the indubitable', Who highlights the chronic difficulties of the theological proofs.

ABSTRACT:Psychedelics have again become a subject of widespread interest, owing to the reinvigoration of research into their traditional uses, possible medical applications, and social implications. As evidence for psychedelics' clinical potential mounts, the field has increasingly focused on searching for mechanisms to explain the effects of psychedelics and therapeutic efficacy of psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT). This paper reviews three general frameworks that encompass several prominent models for understanding psychedelics' effects—specifically, neurobiological, psychological, and spiritual frameworks. Following our review, the implications of each (...)

Regional Analysis of Poverty in Ecuador: Sensitivity to the Choice of Equivalence Scales.Diego F. García-Vélez, Leidy D. Quezada-Ruiz, María del Cisne Tituaña-Castillo & María de la Cruz del Río-Rama - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Economies of scale and equivalent consumption units, which are present in households, must be considered in the measurement of monetary poverty, in order to obtain indicators that approximate the reality of each household. Therefore, in this research, monetary poverty in Ecuador is measured and analyzed at the provincial level for the period 2009–2016. It works with data from the National Survey of Employment, Unemployment and Underemployment and the INEC methodology is used to measure poverty, but per-capita income is replaced by (...)
